A stuck zipper, hyperventilation, and happy tears.

3 years ago today my Dustin Lee asked me to marry him.  Since some of you who read this have never heard the story I thought I would relay it to you now.

To celebrate our 21st birthdays and just experience the wonder that is Las Vegas, on February 19th, 2009, Chris Vest, Corey "Happy" Gilmore, Dustin, and myself with Chris's dad Robbie(he goes usually every year) headed by plane to Vegas.  It is good to note that we took a video camera to video tape some of the experience.  We were recording every dumb thing we could.  On the night of the 21st we had plans to all attend the show at Bally's together and then Dustin and I were going to have a romantic dinner at the Paris Tower restaurant.  We are all in the room getting ready and I had brought one "fancy" dress for the night.  I could not get it zipped and asked for some help.  Eventually, all 3 boys were working on this zipper attempting to zip it all the way up.  The zipper was stuck I wasn't too fat! Promise!  I said "I will just put something else on." I was answered with MANY protests.  "We will get it."  "You ARE wearing THIS!"  I said that it really wasn't that big of a deal but they would NOT give up.  We are all 4 crammed in the bathroom that was not very big to begin with....sweat is pouring off of all of the guys because they were working so hard on this zipper...I am laughing hysterically and not understanding why in the world it could matter that much.(later i would understand).  I thought they were just stubborn guys who would not let a zipper get the best of them.  FINALLY, the zipper went up!!!  We went to the show(which was really good!) and then parted ways.  Dustin and I ate overlooking the water show at the Bellagio.  The view was beautiful.  We then decided to go to the top of the tower.  Dustin told me that we were meeting Happy and Chris at the top(they did not know that he had told me this).  We get to the top of the tower and it was so pretty I see Chris and Happy at the end of the row but do not understand why when I try to get their attention they avoid me.  Dustin and I walk to the end and Chris has the video camera on...He is COMPLETELY caught off guard when I turn the corner and we are face to face(He thought that they were supposed to hide out the whole time).  He is like "Oh, hey...how was dinner?"  I am stupid and do not realize anything is going on..I answer to the camera and then decide that we need a group picture at the top of the tower.  We get someone to take our picture and I then began to almost hyperventilate...My fear of heights kicked into overdrive.  I start saying "I HAVE to get down to the bottom."   Happy starts saying stuff like "Oh you are fine.  Just breathe.  No big deal."  Dustin says "just step back here with me."  I get away from the edge and feel some better.  Then the conversation went like this:

Dustin:  I have something I want to ask you.
Haley:  **thinking**when the heck does he start a convo like that**  saying "ok"
Dustin:  You know I love you, right?
Haley:  Yeah..
Dustin:  You know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, right?
Haley:  Yeah...
**Dustin hits his knee*
**Haley freaks out**
Dustin:  Will you marry me?
Haley:   Yes
**Hugs**Lots of hand flapping and crying and "Oh my gosh" from me.

I cried for like an hour.  On the video of the proposal that was recorded by Chris(that's why we brought that dang thing!) you can hear a lady saying "Aww..look at those two..nobody knows who they are but everybody is watching!"

I was still crying when we got on the elevator to go down to the bottom.  This lady asked me if I was ok and still blubbering " I showed her my shaking hand and said " I just got engaged!"  She started crying then too!  Her husband and Dustin just laughed at us.  He told Dustin that for our 25th anniversary he would have to take me to the real Eiffel Tower.  I sure hope so! HA!

I called tons of people and relayed the story to them.  Dustin got in trouble from Charleston because apparently everyone at home knew it was going to happen for weeks except me and her.  We laughed about it all night.  We went sight seeing all together that night (they let me change into different clothes!) and would be staring at my ring while they were staring at cars, fish, women, etc :)  I am still so very grateful to Happy and Chris for working so hard to make it special.  My engagement is on video and I have tons of pictures.  I have heard all my life that women had no idea that it was coming and I always thought, "how stupid could they be to have no clue!"  Well I was STUPID because I had ABSOLUTELY no idea it was happening.  I LOVE my engagement story, I love Vegas, and most importantly I love the man who put that ring on my finger that night.  I am so thankful that God saw fit to have him be my forever love!
