I posted this on facebook earlier so I am sorry if this is a repeat for you...I will try to elaborate more.
I went to Captain D's in Hartselle today. I eat there about one day a week because their tilapia is yummy. Well today I went through the drive thru because I was watching volleyball finals online and wanted to get back to watch more. I went and as soon as I got to the speaker the girl spoke to me and she was just flat out nice. I immediately could hear the smile in her voice. When I got to the window the entire interaction with her was very pleasant. As she gave me my food, I looked at her and said "Thank you for being so kind." She smiled so big and said "Oh, well thank you." And I just got to thinking...if I complimented them when they were kind instead of complaining when something didn't happen like I wanted it to, how much more pleasant would my random interactions be?
I always try to be overly nice to waiters, cashiers, etc. I don't know why, but I do. I say thank you everytime they do anything that benefits me, say please, smile, tell them to have a good day. I worked retail and know how much it meant when people were kind. I also always try to remember that I could make a difference in their day. Well, I try to remember all that until they take too long with my order or get something wrong or don't know what they are doing.....then it just slips away. I often start out positive until it really matters then I bomb out. SO my new goal is kindness to these people. To all people. But these people have 273462975 interactions a day but they will remember the angry one and the overly kind one. I definitely want to be the overly kind one they remember. Heck, I want to be the overly kind one even if they forget it. I sure don't wanna be that witch who complain and wasn't nice to them at the end of the day.
I am committing to making sure I compliment cashiers, fast food workers, waiters, bank tellers, etc. Tell them thank you. Tell them their kindness was appreciated. Smile at them. Tell them to have a good day. No matter what. I am sure I will bomb out at this at some point BUT I want to try my hardest. I challenge you to do so too. When they do something wrong think about how upset they probably are that they messed up. Embarrassed even. Think that the person before you might have been an angry old lady who just snapped at them for no reason. Think that their child may be sick at home and they cannot get their mind off of it. How different would our lives be if we all did this?
